About CANP

Welcome to the regional group homepage for the California Nature Photographers! This group was established in April of 2003 as the Northern California Nature Photographers to further expand the wonderfully diverse community offered by the Nature Photographers Online Magazine. In July, 2005, the group was expanded to include the entire state of California.

Our primary goal is to build a regional community of individual members who are interested in outdoor photography, and who have a desire to share information, ideas, questions, locations, photos, and an occasional field trip or group gathering. The keywords are casual, friendly, and open to all.

We hope you will enjoy our site. If you do, please spread the word about our NPN regional group to other local photographers and encourage them to take advantage of a NPN membership. More On NPN Membership...

About the Cover Photograph

This month's featured photograph "Ladybug Trail", is by Michael Hansen.

"This was not my first attempt to photograph this section of trail, I have tried it a few times, always hoping to capture the mood of this area, particularly loved how that magnificent oak stretched out over the trail. On this day it was cloudy and overcast helping to tame the light at the end of the canopy. In post processing this image, I backed off the clarity to about -50 and added a little bit of vignette in Lightroom to enhance the moodiness/mystique."

"I was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley just minutes from the Sierra Nevada and spent much of my youth roaming around the hills and mountains, fishing the rivers and streams and exploring the backcountry when I had a chance. After my first backpacking trip at age 16...I was hooked. My love for wild places and wild things grew and soon I began carrying a camera with me to document my adventures. After many, many photographs that didn't look the same as the experience, I decided to learn how to use my camera. After several College photography classes and a whole lot of time spent on the Internet searching and learning....the photos are starting to match the experience. Thanks to the many talented photographers here at NPN for your kind and thoughtful help over the years. "
