About This Site

Welcome to the regional group homepage for the California Nature Photographers! This group was established in April of 2003 as the Northern California Nature Photographers to further expand the wonderfully diverse community offered by the Nature Photographers Online Magazine. In July, 2005, the group was expanded to include the entire state of California.

Our primary goal is to build a regional community of individual members who are interested in outdoor photography, and who have a desire to share information, ideas, questions, locations, photos, and an occasional field trip or group gathering. The keywords are casual, friendly, and open to all.

The only rule: "Play nice in the sandbox."

So put down the tripod, kick up the feet, pull up a keyboard, and enjoy. If you find yourself enjoying this site, please spread the word about our NPN regional group to other local photographers and encourage them to take advantage of a NPN membership.

About the Cover Photo

This month's featured photograph "Minor Details", is by Steve Sierren..

"I've been trying new things lately, and 6 months ago I decided to try abstract photography in nature and with not much luck prior to the day of this photograph.  I was photographing the typical sunset photography at the beach but noticed the patterns galore below my feet.  As  artists / photographers we sometimes get board and need some kind of spark to bring back our faded passion; this was it for me.  The abundance of patterns in the shale really brought back the excitement of when I first picked up a camera.  The way the banded light scraped across the scene made it easy to keep it simple."

"Steve is a professional photographer with an adventurous soul and a passion for landscapes, nature, and the wilderness. His work has been showcased many times in national publications, including Outdoor Photographer magazine. Steve has the ability to search out the most dramatic landscape lighting and capture them with a his unique skills. His influences are David and Marc Muench, Carr Clifton and Philip Hyde. He is also an accomplished photography teacher, leading many workshops and private photo tours in the American southwest. One of Steve's special techniques is night photography and light painting. Steve shoots with what ever box he has available and enjoys getting lost in the Mojave Desert and the Sierra Nevada."
